Description
Fourth shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 1998–99 and 1999–2000 seasons, a striking inverted design of the club’s iconic home kit. Used during an era defined by dominance under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, this alternate strip became closely associated with Manchester United’s historic Treble-winning side and their continued success into the following campaign.
The shirt features a black base, reversing the traditional home colours, with red, white, and black detailing running down the sleeves. A black collar and matching black cuffs are finished with red and white striped accents, giving the shirt a bold, aggressive aesthetic that reflects the intensity of the team during this era.
The 1998–99 season saw Manchester United achieve immortality in football by completing the first ever English Continental Treble. They secured the Premier League title on the final day with a 2–1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, finishing just ahead of Arsenal F.C. in one of the tightest title races in Premier League history. In the FA Cup, they defeated Newcastle United F.C. 2–0 in the final at Wembley, while their Champions League triumph in Barcelona against FC Bayern Munich was sealed by unforgettable stoppage-time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
The following 1999–2000 campaign saw United extend their domestic dominance, retaining the Premier League title with a record 18-point margin and scoring 97 league goals. Despite withdrawing from the FA Cup to participate in the FIFA Club World Championship in Brazil—where they were crowned world champions after defeating Palmeiras—the team remained unmatched domestically, even as they were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid CF in the quarter-finals.
The squad was built around the legendary core of the “Class of ’92”, including David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville, with captain Roy Keane driving the side’s relentless midfield intensity. Up front, the prolific partnership of Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole provided the goals that powered United through their most dominant modern era.
This inverted fourth kit stands as a bold alternative symbol of a team at the absolute peak of English football, representing both the drama of the Treble and the sustained excellence that followed.
