Description
Reversible away/third shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 2001/02 season, a rare trophyless campaign under Sir Alex Ferguson and a year defined by defensive instability, heavy squad transition, and the breakthrough of Ruud van Nistelrooy as the club’s new attacking focal point.
The season itself saw United finish 3rd in the Premier League with 77 points, 10 points behind champions Arsenal, who sealed the title with a 1–0 win at Old Trafford late in the campaign. It also marked United’s first season without silverware since 1991, despite reaching the Champions League semi-finals, where they were eliminated on away goals by Bayer Leverkusen.
Side A: Away Kit (White / Navy / Gold)
The outward-facing side of the shirt presents a clean white textured base, forming the core of the away design. This is contrasted sharply by black/navy raglan-style sleeves, which extend from the collar to create a strong, angular silhouette across the shoulders and upper body.
A dark V-neck collar sits at the neckline, finished with a fine gold piping trim that ties into the centenary-inspired detailing throughout the shirt. Along the sides of the torso, gold mesh vertical panels run down the body, adding both visual structure and subtle performance styling while reinforcing the premium aesthetic of the kit.
The club crest is embroidered over the heart, paired with matching manufacturer branding on the opposite chest. The Vodafone sponsor appears centrally in a bold raised black finish, while a small white-and-gold centenary patch is stitched onto the lower hem to mark 100 years of the club’s identity and heritage.
Side B: Third Kit (Gold / Black Reverse Side)
When reversed, the shirt transforms into a striking monochrome gold third kit. The fabric becomes a vibrant semi-metallic gold, symbolising the club’s centenary status and giving the design a celebratory, statement appearance.
All detailing on this side switches to black, with the V-neck collar, cuffs, and side panels outlined in sharp contrast trim. The crest and branding are re-rendered as flat black-and-gold prints to allow flexibility in the reversible construction, while the Vodafone sponsor remains bold and central in solid black.
This dual-purpose design made the shirt one of the most distinctive of the early 2000s, reflecting both innovation in kit design and the transitional nature of the squad during a season where new signings like Ruud van Nistelrooy, Juan Sebastián Verón, and Laurent Blanc arrived to reshape the team, while established figures like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and Paul Scholes continued to drive performances across a demanding campaign.
