Description
Home shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 2016–17 season, José Mourinho’s first campaign in charge and a year that delivered three trophies despite a disappointing sixth-place finish in the Premier League. The shirt is closely associated with players such as Zlatan Ibrahimović, Paul Pogba, Wayne Rooney and Henrikh Mkhitaryan during a season that restored European silverware to Old Trafford.
The design features a unique two-tone red construction split vertically down the centre of the jersey. The wearer’s right side is rendered in a darker crimson shade, while the left side uses a brighter scarlet red, creating a distinctive contrast that remains subtle enough to preserve the club’s traditional appearance. The split continues across the sleeves and shoulders, giving the shirt a modern and instantly recognisable identity.
Running between the two halves is a subtle honeycomb-style joining band formed from interconnected hexagonal shapes. This textured central strip blends the contrasting shades together while adding depth and detail to the overall design.
Rather than placing detailing across the shoulders, the shirt incorporates vertical side stripes running down the torso. This creates a cleaner upper-body silhouette while providing structure and balance to the design.
The neckline features a solid red crew-neck collar with understated black trim on the inner edge. Hidden inside the back of the neck is a gold “Newton Heath” sign-off, paying tribute to the club’s original name and celebrating Manchester United’s rich heritage.
On the pitch, the 2016–17 season proved highly successful in cup competitions. Manchester United F.C. won the UEFA Europa League for the first time in club history, defeating Ajax 2–0 in the final thanks to goals from Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Mourinho’s side also lifted the EFL Cup after a thrilling 3–2 victory over Southampton and claimed the Community Shield with a 2–1 win against Leicester City.
Although United finished 6th in the Premier League with 69 points, they set a club-record 25-match unbeaten league run, with an unusually high number of draws ultimately preventing a stronger title challenge. Zlatan Ibrahimović led the attack with 28 goals in all competitions before suffering a serious knee injury late in the season, while Paul Pogba returned to the club in a then world-record transfer. Wayne Rooney also made history by becoming Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing record with his 250th goal for the club.
This shirt therefore represents a season of transition, achievement, and renewed success—combining an innovative split-red design with a memorable campaign that delivered three trophies and returned European silverware to Old Trafford.
