Description
Third shirt worn by Manchester United F.C. during the 2021–22 season, a difficult and turbulent campaign that saw managerial changes, inconsistent form, and a sixth-place Premier League finish. The shirt is associated with players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, as the squad struggled for consistency despite moments of individual quality.
The design is built around an all-over sublimated geometric print integrated directly into the fabric. The defining visual element is a repeating chevron structure made from contrasting shaded shapes, forming upward-pointing arrow patterns across the front, back, and sleeves. This creates a dynamic sense of movement while maintaining a cohesive dark aesthetic.
Within the pattern, a subtle abstract “M” motif is woven into the design, referencing both Manchester United and the city itself, as well as the Mancunian Way. The result is a layered visual identity that blends club heritage with modern urban inspiration, only fully visible when viewed up close.
The base colour palette combines deep “Glory Blue” tones with black, creating a dark, multi-layered backdrop that allows the geometric detailing to stand out. Against this subdued base, bright electric yellow accents provide sharp contrast, appearing on the shoulder stripes, sponsor detailing, and shirt printing to add a striking visual edge.
The shirt is completed with a retro-inspired ribbed V-band collar in black, finished with subtle blue trim. This neckline adds structure to the design while reinforcing the modern-vintage fusion that defines the overall aesthetic.
On the pitch, Manchester United F.C. endured another season of frustration, finishing 6th in the Premier League with 58 points and again missing out on silverware. The campaign saw Ole Gunnar Solskjær replaced by Ralf Rangnick, but performances remained inconsistent despite moments of improvement.
In cup competitions, United exited the FA Cup early to Middlesbrough, suffered a third-round EFL Cup defeat to West Ham United, and were eliminated from the Champions League by Atlético Madrid in the Round of 16. Cristiano Ronaldo led the team’s scoring charts with 24 goals in all competitions, while Bruno Fernandes contributed heavily in both goals and assists.
This shirt therefore represents a season of contrast, combining a bold, modern geometric design rooted in Manchester identity with a campaign defined by transition, inconsistency, and reliance on individual brilliance rather than collective success.
