Description
Away shirt worn by Newcastle United F.C. during the 1985–86, 1986–87 and 1987–88 seasons, a defining transitional era under manager Willie McFaul that combined mid-table First Division stability with the emergence of one of English football’s greatest-ever talents, Paul Gascoigne.
The shirt features a grey base with a bold black stripe running across the chest, splitting into white towards the left side in a distinctive asymmetrical design. It is finished with a grey neckline and cuffs, each detailed with black striping, giving the kit a restrained but modern look for its time and a strong contrast to Newcastle’s traditional black-and-white identity.
The 1985–86 season marked a period of change at St James’ Park, beginning just before the campaign with the resignation of Jack Charlton. Willie McFaul stepped in as manager and stabilised the side to an 11th-place First Division finish, with Peter Beardsley leading the scoring charts. Most notably, a young Paul Gascoigne began establishing himself as a first-team regular, hinting at the brilliance that would soon define his career.
The 1986–87 season proved far more difficult, as Newcastle endured a severe winter slump that left them struggling near the bottom of the table. A late revival driven by striker Paul Goddard helped secure survival, but the campaign was also marked by the departure of Peter Beardsley to Liverpool F.C. for a club-record fee, signalling the end of a key attacking era.
In 1987–88, McFaul rebuilt the squad with a more attacking identity. The signing of Brazilian forward Mirandinha made him the first Brazilian to play in English league football, while teenage forward Michael O'Neill emerged as a breakout performer, scoring crucial goals as Newcastle climbed to an 8th-place finish.
Throughout this period, Gascoigne’s rise became the defining storyline. His blend of creativity, unpredictability and technical brilliance made him a fan favourite at St James’ Park before his eventual departure to Tottenham Hotspur F.C. in 1988.
Although the club endured inconsistency and early cup exits, this era laid crucial foundations for the future. This away shirt is closely associated with a formative and highly influential chapter in Newcastle United’s history, one that blended rebuilding, emerging talent, and the early spark of a generational football icon.
