Description
Away shirt worn by Newcastle United F.C. during the 1988–89 and 1989–90 seasons, a turbulent and emotionally charged period that saw the club suffer relegation from the First Division before narrowly missing out on an immediate return from the Second Division under manager Jim Smith.
The shirt features bold green and yellow vertical stripes, enhanced with thin white pinstripes running throughout the fabric to create a vivid, high-contrast design typical of late-1980s football aesthetics. It is finished with a yellow collar detailed with green stripes, giving the shirt a striking and unconventional look compared to Newcastle’s traditional black-and-white identity.
The 1988–89 season proved disastrous for Newcastle United, as the club were relegated from the First Division after finishing 20th. The campaign was heavily impacted by the sale of rising star Paul Gascoigne to Tottenham Hotspur F.C.for a record fee, with reinvestment failing to stabilise a struggling squad. Manager Willie McFaul was dismissed early in the season, and despite the arrival of Jim Smith, results failed to improve. Striker Mirandinha finished as top scorer in a difficult campaign, but Newcastle were ultimately condemned to relegation.
The 1989–90 season in Division Two saw a dramatic turnaround in style, with Jim Smith assembling a far more attacking and entertaining side. New signing Micky Quinn became an instant cult hero, famously scoring four goals on his debut and finishing as the division’s top scorer with 34 league goals. He formed a prolific partnership with Mark McGhee, who added further firepower with 19 league goals.
To add balance and experience, Smith brought in Scotland captain Roy Aitken, helping Newcastle mount a strong late-season push. Despite their attacking brilliance, the Magpies narrowly missed automatic promotion, finishing 3rd before falling to rivals Sunderland A.F.C. in a dramatic play-off semi-final defeat.
Although ultimately unsuccessful, this era became known for its chaotic energy, high-scoring football, and emotional swings, from relegation despair to promotion heartbreak. This away shirt remains closely associated with one of the most dramatic transitional periods in Newcastle United’s modern history.
