Description
Home shirt worn by Newcastle United F.C. during the 1995–96 and 1996–97 seasons, the golden years of Kevin Keegan’s legendary “Entertainers” side. Across these two unforgettable campaigns, Newcastle captivated English football with their fearless attacking style and came agonisingly close to winning their first league title since 1927.
The shirt features Newcastle’s iconic black and white vertical stripes, complemented by a clean white neckline that gives the design a timeless appearance. Instantly recognisable at St James’ Park, it became one of the defining shirts of the Premier League’s early years and remains synonymous with one of the club’s greatest eras.
The 1995–96 season saw Newcastle emerge as the most exciting team in the country. Backed by ambitious chairman Sir John Hall, Kevin Keegan assembled a star-studded squad featuring Les Ferdinand, David Ginola, Warren Barton, Peter Beardsley, and Rob Lee. Newcastle stormed to a 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League by January 1996 and looked destined to become champions.
However, a dramatic downturn in form during the spring months allowed Manchester United F.C. to close the gap. The season became famous for Kevin Keegan’s emotional “I would love it if we beat them!” outburst and the unforgettable 4–3 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. Despite finishing runners-up with 78 points, the team earned admiration across football for their exhilarating approach.
Determined to go one step further, Newcastle broke the world transfer record in the summer of 1996 by signing local hero Alan Shearer from Blackburn Rovers F.C. for £15 million. Shearer immediately delivered, finishing as the Premier League’s top scorer with 25 goals as Newcastle once again challenged near the summit.
One of the defining moments of the 1996–97 campaign came on 20 October 1996, when Newcastle dismantled Manchester United 5–0 at St James’ Park in one of the most iconic matches in Premier League history. Goals from Darren Peacock, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer, and Philippe Albert sealed a performance still celebrated by supporters today.
The season also brought major change when Kevin Keegan resigned in January 1997, shocking the football world. Former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish took charge and guided the club to another runners-up finish, securing UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time in Newcastle United’s history.
Worn by club legends including Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, David Ginola, Peter Beardsley, Rob Lee, Keith Gillespie, Philippe Albert, and Darren Peacock, this home shirt is forever linked to the peak of “The Entertainers” era, two extraordinary seasons that established Newcastle United as one of the most exciting teams English football has ever seen.
