Description
Away shirt worn by Newcastle United F.C. during the 1996–97 season, one of the most iconic and dramatic campaigns in the club’s modern history, defined by attacking brilliance, managerial upheaval, and a historic push for Champions League qualification under manager Kevin Keegan and later Kenny Dalglish.
The shirt features a greyish-blue base with a bold horizontal black panel running across the centre of the chest, incorporating thin white stripe detailing for contrast. It is finished with a black neckline, also featuring white stripes, creating a distinctive and modern design that reflects the bold identity of Newcastle’s “Entertainers” era.
The 1996–97 season began with Newcastle looking to build on consecutive runners-up finishes, but it quickly became one of the most dramatic campaigns in Premier League history. The defining moment came with the world-record signing of Alan Shearer from Blackburn Rovers F.C. for £15 million, a move that instantly elevated expectations at St James’ Park.
Shearer made an immediate impact, finishing as the Premier League’s top scorer with 25 league goals. He formed a devastating partnership with Les Ferdinand, while creative support came from David Ginola, helping Newcastle produce some of the most entertaining football in Europe.
The season also produced one of the greatest Premier League performances of all time, as Newcastle dismantled reigning champions Manchester United F.C. 5–0 at St James’ Park, with goals from Darren Peacock, Ginola, Ferdinand, Shearer, and Philippe Albert in a match still remembered for its dominance and flair.
However, the campaign was also marked by turbulence. After a difficult run of results, Kevin Keegan resigned in January 1997, shocking the football world. Following a short caretaker spell, Kenny Dalglish was appointed and steadied the side during the closing months of the season.
On the final day, Newcastle produced a decisive 5–0 victory over Nottingham Forest F.C., allowing them to secure 2nd place in the Premier League and Champions League qualification on goal difference ahead of their rivals.
The squad was packed with talent throughout, including Rob Lee, David Batty, Lee Clark, Keith Gillespie, and defensive stalwarts such as Philippe Albert and Warren Barton. In goal, both Shaka Hislop and Pavel Srníček contributed during a season of high intensity and constant change.
This away shirt remains closely associated with the peak of Newcastle United’s “Entertainers” era, an unforgettable season of breathtaking attacking football, record-breaking transfers, and one of the most famous league campaigns in Premier League history.
