Description

Goalkeeper shirt worn by Newcastle United F.C. during the 1997–98 season, a turbulent but memorable campaign under Kenny Dalglish that combined a disappointing league finish with an FA Cup Final appearance and a UEFA Champions League group stage run.

The shirt features a bold turquoise base with an eye-catching snakeskin-style pattern across the body, giving it one of the most distinctive goalkeeper designs of the late 1990s. It is finished with half black sleeves, a black neckline, and black detailing running down the full length of each sleeve, creating a sharp contrast that enhances the aggressive, modern aesthetic of the kit.

The 1997–98 season saw Newcastle struggle for consistency in the FA Premiership, ultimately finishing 13th. The campaign was heavily impacted before it even began, with a major pre-season ankle injury to Alan Shearer significantly reducing the team’s attacking threat throughout the year. Despite this, the squad still managed to reach both the FA Cup Final and the UEFA Champions League group stage, highlighting the contrast between cup success and league inconsistency.

A key storyline of the season was the goalkeeping battle that defined Newcastle’s defensive stability. Shay Given, signed from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 1997, quickly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper, making 34 league appearances and cementing his reputation as a rising talent. He was closely challenged by Shaka Hislop, who made 21 league appearances and provided strong competition throughout the season. Meanwhile, veteran Pavel Srníček served as third-choice goalkeeper, making a single league appearance before departing at the end of the campaign. Young prospect Steve Harper remained part of the development squad and gained experience through loan spells.

In Europe, Newcastle’s Champions League campaign included one of the most famous nights in club history, a dramatic 3–2 victory over FC Barcelona at St James’ Park, with Faustino Asprilla famously scoring a hat-trick. However, despite these highs, inconsistency in the group stage prevented progression.

At Wembley, Newcastle reached the FA Cup Final but were beaten 2–0 by Arsenal F.C., ending a season of near misses and contrasting fortunes.

Worn during one of the most emotionally varied seasons in Newcastle’s modern history, this goalkeeper shirt represents both the emergence of Shay Given as a long-term number one and the final chapter of a transitional era defined by resilience, inconsistency, and cup drama.

Washing Instructions

Care Instructions To keep your shirt looking its best for years to come, please follow these guidelines carefully.
🌡️ Temperature
Wash at 30°C maximum. Higher temperatures can damage the fabric, fade colours, and crack printed lettering.
🔄 Cycle
Use a gentle or delicate cycle only. Avoid heavy spin cycles which can distort the shirt shape.
👕 Inside Out
Always turn the shirt inside out before washing to protect the back print, badges, and any embroidery.
🧴 Detergent
Use a mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners as these can degrade print quality.
💨 Drying
Air dry only — lay flat or hang away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry as heat will shrink fabric and damage prints.
🔥 Ironing
Do not iron directly over printed areas or badges. If needed, iron on the reverse side only using a low heat setting.
Do not dry clean. Do not wring or twist. Wash separately from items with zips or rough textures that could snag the fabric.
⚠️ Back Print & Badge Care Printed names, numbers, and woven badges are particularly sensitive to heat and abrasion. Always wash inside out, never iron over them directly, and avoid contact with rough surfaces during washing.
