Description
Home shirt worn by Newcastle United F.C. during the 1997–98 and 1998–99 seasons, a turbulent period that saw the club drift away from its “Entertainers” peak while still producing memorable cup runs and unforgettable moments at St James’ Park.
The shirt features Newcastle’s traditional black and white vertical stripes, finished with a black neckline and black cuffs detailed with white stripes. Bold yellow detailing runs down the sleeves, giving the kit a distinctive late-1990s identity while still retaining the club’s classic visual heritage. It became closely associated with a period of transition, inconsistency, and dramatic cup football.
The 1997–98 season began under manager Kenny Dalglish, following the previous season’s second-place finish. However, the campaign quickly became difficult in the Premier League, with Newcastle finishing 13th on 44 points. A major setback came when Alan Shearer suffered a serious ankle injury in pre-season, limiting his influence for much of the year and contributing to a reduced attacking output.
Despite league struggles, Newcastle produced one of their most famous European nights in UEFA Champions League history, defeating FC Barcelona 3–2 at St James’ Park. The match is best remembered for a sensational hat-trick from Faustino Asprilla. The Magpies also enjoyed a strong FA Cup run, reaching Wembley, but ultimately lost 2–0 to Arsenal F.C. in the final.
The 1998–99 season saw further upheaval, with Dalglish departing early in the campaign and Ruud Gullit taking charge. Gullit attempted to reshape the squad and implement a more expansive style of play, bringing in players such as Nolberto Solano and Dietmar Hamann.
Key senior figures during this period included Alan Shearer, who remained the club’s main attacking threat with 21 goals in all competitions, alongside Rob Lee, David Batty, Shay Given, Warren Barton, Steve Howey, Keith Gillespie and Darren Peacock.
Despite reaching a second consecutive FA Cup Final, Newcastle were once again beaten 2–0 at Wembley, this time by Manchester United F.C., as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side completed their historic treble-winning season. League form also stagnated, with the Magpies finishing 13th once more.
Worn during one of the most unpredictable phases in Newcastle United’s modern history, this shirt represents a team caught between eras, capable of European brilliance and cup runs, yet struggling for consistency in the Premier League as the post-“Entertainers” rebuild took shape.
