Description
Away shirt worn by Newcastle United F.C. during the 1999–2000 season, a memorable campaign that saw the club recover from a disastrous start to finish comfortably in mid-table following the arrival of legendary manager Bobby Robson.
The shirt features a white base with green panels around the lower sections of each sleeve, complemented by black and green detailing running down the sleeves. A black collar and neckline accented with a green stripe provide a distinctive finish, while black cuffs complete the design, creating one of Newcastle’s most recognisable away shirts of the era.
The season began in turmoil under Ruud Gullit. A poor run of results, including a defeat to rivals Sunderland A.F.C. in which captain Alan Shearer was controversially left out of the starting lineup, left Newcastle at the foot of the Premier League table. Gullit departed in August 1999, paving the way for the appointment of Bobby Robson on 1 September.
Robson immediately transformed the atmosphere around the club. His first home match produced an unforgettable 8–0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday F.C., with Shearer scoring five goals in one of the greatest individual performances in Premier League history. Newcastle ultimately climbed to 11th place, finishing the season with 52 points after a remarkable turnaround.
The Magpies also enjoyed a strong FA Cup run, reaching the semi-finals before being narrowly defeated 2–1 by Chelsea F.C.. In Europe, they reached the third round of the UEFA Cup before being eliminated by AS Roma.
Shearer once again led the team from the front, scoring 30 goals in all competitions, including 23 in the Premier League. He was supported by key performers such as Gary Speed, who contributed 13 goals, and Nolberto Solano, whose 14 assists made him one of the division’s most creative players. New signing Kieron Dyer also made an immediate impact following his arrival from Ipswich Town, while experienced striker Duncan Ferguson added valuable goals throughout the campaign.
This away shirt remains closely associated with one of the most important turning points in Newcastle United’s modern history, marking the arrival of Bobby Robson and the beginning of a revival that restored optimism and ambition to St James’ Park.
