Description
Away shirt worn by Newcastle United F.C. during the 2000–01 season, Sir Bobby Robson’s first full campaign in charge, a year defined by transition, injury setbacks, and squad rebuilding.
The shirt features a black base with two light blue panels positioned beneath either arm, giving it a distinctive and modern contrast design. White detailing runs across the front and continues down the sleeves, while a black collar is complemented by a white and light blue neckline, tying together the club’s traditional colours in a bold alternative away aesthetic.
The 2000–01 season saw Newcastle United finish 11th in the Premier League with 51 points, a mid-table finish that reflected both inconsistency and the disruption caused by a severe injury crisis. Despite early optimism under Robson, the squad struggled to maintain momentum throughout the campaign.
Key absences heavily impacted the season. Captain Alan Shearer missed a significant portion of the year through injury, while major signing Carl Cort was also sidelined after an encouraging start. This forced Robson to rely on limited attacking options, including veteran Kevin Gallacher and emerging academy striker Shola Ameobi.
Despite these challenges, there were important developments within the squad. Robson oversaw a wider rebuilding process, moving on players such as Duncan Ferguson, Didier Domi, and Alain Goma, while introducing younger talents like Lomana LuaLua and defender Andy O'Brien into the first-team setup.
In cup competitions, Newcastle exited early in both domestic tournaments, but their league finish was enough to secure qualification for the UEFA Intertoto Cup, offering a route back into European competition.
Although the season was inconsistent on the pitch, it represented an important transitional year in the Bobby Robson era, laying the groundwork for the stronger, more competitive Newcastle side that would follow in the early 2000s.
