Description
Home shirt worn by Newcastle United F.C. during the 2000–01 season, Sir Bobby Robson’s first full campaign in charge, defined by heavy injury disruption, squad rebuilding, and an ultimately inconsistent mid-table Premier League finish.
The shirt features Newcastle’s traditional black and white vertical stripes, modernised with blue detailing along the base of the shirt. It includes a black collar with blue underlining, blue cuffs, and white-and-blue detailing running down the sleeves, giving the classic design a sharper, contemporary edge while retaining the club’s iconic identity.
The 2000–01 season saw Robson continue reshaping the squad after his arrival the previous year, but progress was severely impacted by an intense injury crisis. Newcastle finished 11th in the FA Premier League with 51 points, recording 14 wins, 9 draws, and 15 losses across the campaign. Despite an initially promising start, the loss of key players throughout the season disrupted momentum and consistency.
Club captain Alan Shearer was sidelined for a significant portion of the season, while new signing Carl Cort also suffered long-term injury problems after an encouraging start. As a result, Robson was forced to rely on backup options such as an ageing Kevin Gallacher and emerging academy striker Shola Ameobi, who began to establish himself in the first team.
Despite the setbacks, the squad saw continued evolution, with Robson introducing younger and developing talents into the side while also moving on several senior players as part of a broader rebuild. Creative influence throughout the season came from Nolberto Solano, while goalkeeper Shay Given remained a key consistent performer.
Newcastle’s cup runs were modest, exiting the FA Cup in the third round and the League Cup in the fourth round. However, their league finish secured qualification for the 2001–02 UEFA Intertoto Cup, offering another route into European competition.
Worn during a challenging but foundational season, this shirt represents the early phase of Sir Bobby Robson’s long-term project at St James’ Park, one defined less by immediate success, and more by restructuring, resilience, and the gradual emergence of a more stable Newcastle United side.
