In 1989, Palmeiras showed strong form in the Campeonato Paulista, remaining undefeated for much of the competition before being eliminated in the semi-finals by Bragantino, while also finishing 5th in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. The 1990 season proved more difficult, with the team finishing 15th in the league and undergoing multiple managerial changes. By 1991, performances had improved, with Palmeiras reaching the quarter-finals of the Série A and finishing 6th overall, alongside winning the Euro-América Tournament with a victory over Hamburg.

Although success was limited, this period laid important groundwork for the club’s resurgence, helping stabilise the squad ahead of one of the most successful eras in Palmeiras’ history.
