Playing an ultra-attacking 4-2-2-2 “Magic Square” formation, the team delivered one of the most dominant campaigns ever seen in the Campeonato Paulista, winning 27 of 30 matches and scoring an incredible 102 goals. Their dominance was so complete that they won both phases of the competition, making a final unnecessary.

Palmeiras also reached the Copa do Brasil final, defeating Grêmio in the semi-finals before suffering a surprise defeat to Cruzeiro. In the Campeonato Brasileiro, the team’s form declined in the latter half of the year following key departures, and they were eventually eliminated in the quarter-finals by Grêmio. Internationally, they showcased their attacking brilliance with a remarkable 6–1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Euro-America Cup.

The squad was packed with elite talent, including Rivaldo, Luizão, and Müller in attack, supported by the creative brilliance of Djalminha in midfield. The team also featured standout players such as Freddy Rincón, Amaral, Cafu, and Cléber, forming a side filled with future stars and international quality.
