During the 2012/13 campaign, Real Madrid started strongly by winning the Supercopa de España against FC Barcelonaon away goals after a 4–4 aggregate draw. However, it ultimately proved to be their only trophy of the season. Under manager José Mourinho, the club finished 2nd in La Liga with 85 points, ending 15 points behind Barcelona. They also reached the final of the Copa del Rey but were defeated 2–1 after extra time by city rivals Atlético de Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. In Europe, Madrid advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League before being eliminated by Borussia Dortmund 4–3 on aggregate, marking their third consecutive semi-final exit.
