Internationally, the side entered the season as reigning Copa Libertadores champions after their 1996 triumph over América de Cali, though they narrowly lost the Intercontinental Cup 1–0 to Juventus in Tokyo and were beaten on penalties by Vélez Sársfield in the Recopa Sudamericana.
