Description
Away shirt worn by Tigres UANL during the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
The shirt features a white base combined with a bold yellow and blue tiger-print graphic running across the design, creating one of the most unique and visually aggressive shirts in Mexican football during the mid-1990s. A blue collar and matching cuffs with yellow stripe detailing complete the vibrant look, perfectly reflecting Tigres’ fierce identity and traditional colours. The wild tiger-inspired pattern made the shirt instantly recognisable and remains one of the club’s most memorable away designs.
The 1995/96 season is one of the most extraordinary and paradoxical campaigns in Tigres UANL history, as the club simultaneously won a major domestic trophy, qualified for the playoffs, and suffered relegation from the Mexican Primera División.
Under manager Víctor Manuel Vucetich, Tigres enjoyed success in the Copa México, defeating Atlas 2–1 on aggregate in the final to secure the club’s second domestic cup title and their first major trophy since 1976. The cup triumph provided supporters with a memorable achievement during an otherwise turbulent campaign.
Despite their cup success, Tigres faced severe problems in the league due to Mexico’s percentage-based relegation system, which calculated results over multiple seasons. Years of inconsistent performances left the club battling for survival throughout the campaign. The decisive moment came on 24 March 1996 in the infamous “Clásico del Descenso” against arch-rivals CF Monterrey. Tigres lost the match 2–1 at the Estadio Universitario, and combined with results elsewhere, the defeat confirmed the club’s first-ever relegation to the Primera División A.
Remarkably, despite being relegated, Tigres still qualified for the Liguilla playoffs after finishing 10th overall in the league standings. They advanced through the Repechaje wildcard round before eventually being eliminated by Necaxa in the quarter-finals. The bizarre situation of a relegated team competing for the national championship later forced the Mexican Football Federation to change its regulations, preventing similar scenarios from happening again.
The squad featured several notable players during the campaign, including defender and top scorer Sergio Almaguer, while the passionate Tigres supporters continued to create one of the most intimidating atmospheres in Mexican football despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the club.
Following relegation, Tigres underwent major financial restructuring through agreements involving CEMEX and FEMSA, helping stabilise the club and paving the way for an immediate return to the top division the following season.
This away shirt is remembered as one of the boldest and most iconic designs in Tigres history, symbolising a chaotic but unforgettable campaign filled with triumph, heartbreak, and one of the most unique stories ever seen in Mexican football.
