Description
Home shirt worn by Tigres UANL during the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
The shirt features a vibrant yellow base covered with bold blue tiger-print graphics running across the design, perfectly capturing the aggressive identity and visual style associated with Tigres UANL during the mid-1990s. A blue collar and matching cuffs with yellow stripe detailing complete the look, creating a striking contrast that strongly reflects the club’s traditional colours. The wild tiger-inspired pattern made this one of the most distinctive and unforgettable shirts in Mexican football history.
The 1995/96 season remains one of the most dramatic and paradoxical campaigns ever experienced by Tigres UANL, as the club managed to win a major domestic trophy, qualify for the playoffs, and suffer relegation all within the same season.
Under manager Víctor Manuel Vucetich, Tigres achieved major success in the Copa México by defeating Atlas 2–1 on aggregate in the final. The triumph secured the club’s second domestic cup title and ended a long wait for major silverware, marking Tigres’ first significant trophy since 1976.
Despite their cup success, league performances were heavily affected by Mexico’s percentage-based relegation system, which punished the club for poor results accumulated over several previous seasons. The defining moment came on 24 March 1996 during the infamous “Clásico del Descenso” against arch-rivals CF Monterrey. Tigres lost 2–1 at the Estadio Universitario, and combined with other results, the defeat mathematically confirmed the club’s first and only relegation to the Primera División A.
Remarkably, Tigres still qualified for the Liguilla playoffs despite being relegated, finishing 10th overall in the league table. After advancing through the Repechaje wildcard stage, they were eventually eliminated by Necaxa in the quarter-finals. The bizarre scenario of a relegated team continuing to compete for the national title later forced the Mexican Football Federation to change its regulations.
The squad featured several notable figures during the campaign, including defender Sergio Almaguer, who finished as the team’s top scorer with seven goals, alongside a passionate fanbase that continued to create one of the most intimidating atmospheres in Mexican football despite the difficult circumstances.
Following relegation, Tigres underwent significant restructuring supported by agreements involving CEMEX and FEMSA, allowing the club to stabilise financially and secure immediate promotion back to the top flight the following season.
This home shirt is remembered as one of the boldest and most iconic designs in Tigres history, symbolising a chaotic but unforgettable campaign filled with triumph, heartbreak, and one of the most unique stories ever seen in Mexican football.
