The 1999 season saw Vasco da Gama continue as one of South America’s strongest squads following their centenary triumph in 1998. Under manager Antônio Lopes, the club remained highly competitive across multiple competitions while fielding one of the most talented squads in Brazilian football at the time.

Vasco won the Torneio Rio–São Paulo and also lifted the Taça Rio, although they finished as runners-up in the Campeonato Carioca after losing the final to Flamengo. In the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, they finished 3rd in the league stage but were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the knockout rounds. The team also reached the Round of 16 in both the Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brasil, while exiting the Copa Mercosur at the group stage.

The squad was built around a group of star names in a transitional “dream team” phase. Edmundo was the club’s top scorer with 13 goals, while Romário returned later in the year to add elite finishing and experience. Creativity came from Juninho Pernambucano and Ramon Menezes, with defensive leadership provided by captain Mauro Galvão.
