Description
Away shirt worn by Vasco da Gama during the 1998 season.
The shirt features a clean white base highlighted by Vasco’s iconic diagonal black sash running across the front of the shirt. Two thin red pinstripes border the sash, adding a sharp contrast and reinforcing the club’s traditional colours. A black neckline and matching black cuffs give the design a strong finish, while black detailing down the sleeves enhances the bold late-90s aesthetic. The combination of simplicity and striking diagonal design makes this one of Vasco da Gama’s most memorable away shirts.
The 1998 season is one of the most iconic in Vasco da Gama’s history, as the club celebrated its centenary year by winning the Copa Libertadores for the first time. Under manager Antônio Lopes, Vasco emerged as one of South America’s strongest sides, combining experience, attacking quality, and resilience throughout a historic campaign.
Vasco defeated Barcelona SC of Ecuador 4–1 on aggregate in the Libertadores final, winning both legs to secure continental glory. Their route to the title included victories over defending champions Cruzeiro, Grêmio, and River Plate, with Juninho Pernambucano’s famous free-kick against River Plate becoming one of the defining moments of the campaign. Domestically, the club also won the Campeonato Carioca by securing both the Taça Guanabara and Taça Rio.
Despite continental success, Vasco narrowly missed out on further international honours later in the year. The team finished as runners-up in both the Intercontinental Cup against Real Madrid and the Copa Interamericana against D.C. United. They also reached the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil and finished 10th in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A during a demanding schedule.
The squad featured several legendary figures, including captain Mauro Galvão, whose leadership anchored the defence, and Juninho Pernambucano, the midfield maestro renowned for his creativity and set-piece brilliance. Other key players included Edmundo and Donizete, forming one of the most talented squads in the club’s history.
This shirt is remembered as an iconic design from Vasco da Gama’s legendary centenary season, symbolising continental triumph and one of the greatest eras in the club’s history.
