Description
Away shirt worn by Watford F.C. during the 1985 to 1988 period.
The shirt features a clean white base with a bold red and black horizontal stripe running across the centre of the chest, creating a striking contrast that mirrors the club’s traditional home identity in an alternative colourway. A black neckline and cuffs complete the structure of the shirt, while fine red, white, and yellow pinstripes add subtle detail and texture, giving the design a distinctive and unmistakably 1980s aesthetic.
The 1985–88 era was a period of major transition for Watford, moving from a stable First Division side into a difficult rebuilding phase following the departure of key figures who had defined their rise in the early 1980s. Under the long influence of Graham Taylor, Watford had established themselves as a respected top-flight club, but this era marked the beginning of significant change.
The 1985–86 season saw Watford maintain a solid First Division position, finishing mid-table and producing strong performances at Vicarage Road. The club also reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, where they were eventually eliminated by Liverpool F.C., while enjoying memorable victories that highlighted their attacking quality.
By the 1986–87 season, Watford were still competitive, finishing 9th in the league and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals. However, this campaign also marked the end of an era, as Graham Taylor departed to join Aston Villa F.C., while star winger John Barnes was sold to Liverpool, signalling the breakdown of the team that had driven Watford’s success in the early decade.
The 1987–88 season proved far more difficult. Without key personnel, Watford struggled in the First Division and ultimately finished bottom of the table, suffering relegation after winning just seven league matches. Managerial changes involving Dave Bassett and later Steve Harrison were unable to reverse the decline. Despite league struggles, the club still managed an unexpected FA Cup quarter-final run and notable victories over Arsenal F.C..
This away shirt is remembered as a distinctive counterpart to the home design, symbolising Watford’s final years of top-flight stability before their dramatic decline and eventual relegation at the end of the 1980s.
